A Unique Military Path
Meet Staff Sgt. Robert Meyers, a dedicated service member with a truly unique military background.
Over the past 12 years, he has proudly donned the uniforms of three different branches: the Army, the Navy, and currently, the Air Force.
Starting out in the Ohio Army National Guard, Meyers devoted six years of his life to service, including a noteworthy deployment to Guantanamo Bay, where he played a vital role in detainee operations.
After wrapping up his commitment, he considered joining the Air National Guard.
However, he encountered some hurdles in the recruitment process.
Rather than give up, he decided to broaden his horizons and explored options within the Navy, leading him to a four-year stint in the Navy Reserve.
Deployment and Experience
During his time in the Navy, Meyers found himself deployed to Djibouti, where he gained hands-on experience operating tactical vehicles to ferry boats from Camp Lemonier to the nearby port.
Each of these experiences added valuable layers to his military career.
In 2023, Meyers made the leap to the Air Force Reserve, where he focuses on responsibilities in security and law enforcement.
His military journey has complemented his academic pursuits—he has earned a college degree and used the skills he acquired in service to advance in civilian law enforcement roles.
A Commitment to Growth
Although it’s rare for one individual to serve in multiple military branches, Meyers isn’t alone in his diverse journey.
Master Sgt. Jesus Yanez, another reservist, completed an impressive 31-year career that spanned four branches of the military, including the Marine Corps, Navy, and Army, before retiring from the Texas Air National Guard in January 2024.
Currently, Meyers is attending a law enforcement academy, preparing for a new role as an armed protective security officer.
He noted that the training he is undergoing—focused on de-escalation, weapon handling, and use of force—echoes the lessons he learned throughout his military service.
Driven by a desire to experience varied landscapes and situations, Meyers embraces a spirit of adventure and adaptability in his professional life.
His journey illustrates a commitment to exploration and growth, reflecting the diverse opportunities that military service can provide.
