Authorities apprehended Alfredo Reyes Jr., a 40-year-old man, after probing into the theft of three Humvees and other military gear from a Southern California Army Reserve Center.
The Tustin Police Department provided an update on their Facebook page, announcing that the stolen vehicles and additional military equipment had been recovered.
Details of the Theft
The incident occurred on January 8 when the culprits unlawfully took the vehicles from the Army Reserve Center’s storage facility.
In addition to the Humvees, a significant haul included 40 pairs of binoculars, eight machine gun mounts for vehicles, seven tripods for such weapons, various medical supplies, and 18 bayonets.
Fortunately, no guns or ammunition were reported missing during the heist.
Investigation Findings
Investigators uncovered signs of forced entry into several storage lockers.
Additionally, there was evidence of an unsuccessful attempt to cut a lock on the uniform storage area.
A breach in a fence also allowed access to where the Humvees were secured.
Recovery and Arrest
Among the stolen Humvees, one was armored while the other two had fabric doors.
Just before Reyes was taken into custody, police managed to recover both of the soft-sided vehicles, and the third has since been found.
Reyes’ arrest took place on January 16, following a coordinated operation by local law enforcement and various agencies that executed search warrants in Orange, California.
While the specific charges against him have not been revealed, authorities have yet to clarify the motive behind this brazen theft.
