Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro has officially announced that the latest Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer will be named the future USS Intrepid.
This exciting news was unveiled during a special event aboard the historic USS Intrepid, which now serves as a museum located in New York City.
Significance of the USS Intrepid
During his address, Del Toro emphasized the profound significance of the USS Intrepid and the values that it embodies: courage, resilience, and sacrifice.
He reflected on the impressive legacy tied to the Intrepid name, noting how it continues to inspire countless visitors.
In this historic setting, he also conveyed a sense of anticipation for the Navy’s future advancements.
This new destroyer marks the fifth ship in U.S. Navy history to adopt the Intrepid name, honoring the bravery of its predecessors as well as the dedicated service of sailors from the South China Sea to the Red Sea.
History of the USS Intrepid
The roots of the first Intrepid date back to 1798 when it was built in France for Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign.
Initially serving in Tripoli, it was seized by the U.S. Navy in 1803 and renamed Intrepid.
Following that, the second Intrepid was an experimental torpedo boat that launched from Boston on August 3, 1874.
Its mission was to support weapon development until it ceased operations in 1892.
The third vessel named Intrepid came into service as a barracks and receiving ship in 1904.
It was stationed at California’s Yerba Buena Training Station and Mare Island Naval Yard.
The fourth Intrepid, a notable aircraft carrier, served from 1943 until 1974.
It played a significant role during World War II, particularly in the liberation of the Philippines, where it participated in crucial assaults against Japanese forces and withstood numerous kamikaze attacks.
Endorsements and Sponsorship
Expressing enthusiasm for the new destroyer, Susan Marenoff-Zausner, President of the Intrepid Museum, remarked that the ship is poised to carry on the proud legacy of its namesake.
She extended her best wishes for the safety and success of both the vessel and its crew.
In another important announcement, Del Toro revealed that his wife, Betty Del Toro, would take on the role of the ship’s sponsor.
Having been a military spouse for over two decades and experienced 17 relocations, she is a passionate advocate for military families.
Betty expressed her pride in sponsoring a vessel that embodies the spirit of American bravery and tenacity.
Drawing from her own experiences alongside her husband throughout his Navy career and his time as Secretary of the Navy, she promised to continue supporting Navy personnel and their families.
