On Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the deployment of more than 400 National Guard troops from Houston and Fort Worth to bolster security at the U.S.-Mexico border.
This move is part of a broader strategy to partner with Border Patrol agents in efforts to curb unauthorized immigration and enforce existing immigration laws.
Support for Border Security Initiatives
To support this initiative, Abbott is also ordering the use of C-130 aircraft, which are well-suited for rugged terrain, along with Chinook helicopters.
These forces will work alongside the Texas Tactical Border Force, a unit that has already been stationed along the border since the launching of Operation Lone Star in 2021—a response to the federal administration’s immigration policies.
Operation Lone Star and Federal Collaboration
Since its inception, Operation Lone Star has mobilized thousands of National Guard members, although the precise number currently on duty has not been disclosed.
Recently, the Trump administration supplemented border security efforts by sending 1,500 active-duty soldiers to the area.
Proposals for Mass Deportations
Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude for the backing he has received from the White House, highlighting the collaboration between the state of Texas and the federal government in tackling border security challenges.
He praised President Donald Trump’s leadership on these issues and conveyed his enthusiasm for working closely with the administration.
In addition, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham has suggested the use of a ranch located in Starr County as a potential hub for mass deportations, a proposal that has garnered some approval from officials within the Trump administration.
